For my product I will create a news program for the DACC. This news program will be a compilation of my research. What I have learned from writing my paper will be used in the production and filming of the program.

The DACC News program will contain stories and information pertaining to the DACC and its students. The news will be presented in a mildly funny, but factual news broadcast. This will make the program more interesting and keep students attention.

My research is on Broadcast news and my product is creating a news program. To create this I will need to gain knowledge in setting up camera angles, video editing, and green screening. To create my finished product from the start of scripting to the final product will take 2-3 weeks.

Thesis: Broadcast news is a very complex and precise art. Most people do not think about how stories and news programs are put together. There is a standard method in which most news programs and news stories are formatted. This format provides the best way to incorporate all aspects of a story and present it in a way that is meaningful to the viewer.

What do you do on a daily basis?  I am responsible for the on air
quality and technical support of NBC 4.  That encompasses four areas:
engineering, IT, operations, and facilities.  We prioritize our
activities based on projects, repair needs, and the news of the day.

What are the benefits of your field?  It is different every day.  We
work with interesting people and play with various cool technologies.

What are the drawbacks of your field?  Breaking news and mission
critical equipment failure can result in early morning telephone calls
and very long days.  We are a 24/7 business.

What hours do you typically work?  I’m usually in the office by 8am and
tend to leave around 7pm or 8pm.

What education would be required for this type of work?  College degree
in communications, electronic engineering, information technology, or
similar field.

What skills are necessary for this field?  Strong verbal and written
communication skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments,
analytical and creative thinking, and solid computer experience and
knowledge

What pay range do people in your field of work typically make?  Entry
level can be up to $25,000/year.  Middle management positions are
between $50,000 and $70,000 per year.  Senior leadership level is
typically over $100,000/year.

How difficult is it to get a job in broadcasting?  Harder than it used
to be five years ago.  Matching the individual with the job description
is challenging.  Most openings require previous experience.

What advice would you give to someone planning to work in the broadcast
field?  Students should participate in internship and fellowship
programs and then make the most of those opportunities.  They should
learn everything they can either by observing and paying attention to
processes or through hands on experience that is provided during the
program.  Employers remember students who make a good impression during
their internships.  NBC 4 has hired many past interns as part-time and
temporary employees.  Several have earned full-time positions.
